There are many roadblocks that can keep someone from fulfilling their potential many of them being financial. As the cost of living continues to rise, annual raises (for those lucky enough to receive one) are barely enough to keep up with the rate inflation, let alone provide the means to get ahead. For many, the inability to sock enough away to invest in their future in spite of a burning passion to do so is one of lifes harshest ironies; and while it may seem impossible, there is always a way for the truly motivated to alter their career path. But First, Why Is A Bad Pop Song Like A Bad Career? Though it may seem like a weak analogy, a bad career and a bad song share a number of striking similarities. As far as either is concerned, if its bad, people would rather do anything than waste their breath talking about it. Those who are passionate about the work they do (or the music they love) cant wait to tell others all about it. Conversely, people who dont like their job or feel unfulfilled in their role usually speak about it with disdain if at all, much in the same way theyd speak about a song they find utterly obnoxious. Bad jobs are also frequently associated with repetitiveness and a lack of substance two more qualities bad pop has in common with an insufferable career. Tips On Turning It Around Be Introspective Different things motivate different people. For some, the key to happiness resides in being financially secure while for others its doing what they love. A common test often put to those that have been unable to focus on one particular field is to identify a calling that they would happily do for free. While this may be an oversimplification, it can help to narrow the field down somewhat. Create a Comprehensive Skill Set Being passionate about something doesnt necessarily make it the right career choice (passion alone wont pay the bills after all). A more accurate way for someone to figure out which career to pursue is to combine their passions with their skillset. For example, someone who enjoys building things (or dismantling something to see how it works) and has a penchant for mathematics and science may do well to pursue a career as a electronics technician. There are a plethora of skill assessment tests available to take that have been designed to help coalesce ones passion and skills. Generally speaking, each test provides a number of different career options, though its important to remember that the recommendations are only to be taken as a jumping off point for further research and consideration. Become An Intern A Paid InternMany people envision the role of the intern as someone whose sole function is to make photocopies and the occasional run to Starbucks. While there may be a task or two that may seem beneath ones ambitions, its important to remember that an internship is a front row seat that offers an unobstructed view of the inner workings of an entire industry. Internships also provide the opportunity to develop a mentor/mentee relationship, which is something that can possibly be leveraged into a full time position down the road. Note: Unpaid internships are becoming less and less popular, meaning that becoming an internship does not necessarily mean an accompanied period of financial hardship. Values Are ImportantMany companies, both emerging and longstanding, are putting more time and money into developing their own corporate culture. For many job seekers its important to work for an organization that shares similar values. All else being equal, a healthy and fostering corporate culture can be difference between choosing one firm over another. A Career Path is Just That A PathTimes have changed. For most of the workforce, the idea that theyll stay with one company over their entire career is not realistic, nor is it something that is particularly desired. A career path should be nonlinear by nature; each job along the way has the ability to shape a persons skillset in unexpected and pleasant ways. That said, its important to keep an open mind when thinking about a career path because it is more likely than not going to change as time goes on. We are always eager to hear from our readers.
