Some recent and fascinating speculation about Superman suggests that his comic book character welches explicitly created in 1933 by Jewish Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster as a Biblical golem (an indestructible super-human avenger and protector of the tribes of Israel), or that he is Jesus (in disguise), or serves as an inspiration to illegal immigrants everywhere, because he is one,or is a libertarian champion of the resistance against the New World Order.However, Supermans significance as an employee icon, paradigm and role model seems to have flown under the radar of pop and work culture, seemingly overlooked, ignored, undetected or disregarded by kids, HR managers and critics alike.To redress this imbalance, lets take a close look at the employment resume and work style, habits and values of Superman (a.k.a. Clark Kent), with a view to teasing out useful real-world job and career tips as inspiration for job seekers, job holders, recruiters, managers and employers1. Absenteeism will be forgiven if there is a spectacular offset Despite his exasperating tendency to disappear just as some huge disaster or dramatic rescue is unfolding, Clark Kents occasional scoop interviews and reliable pipeline to Superman mitigate the vanishing act- indeed, make the sudden disappearances pale in comparison.This principle is not some pure Hollywood and comic book fiction and fantasy in fact, its a tacit guid ing principle of many U.S. elected officials and administrators, e.g., of frequently vacationing presidents and session-skipping members of congress who occasionally endear themselves by supporting something thats very popular and maybe even right.2. As long as they get the job done and nobody else wants or can do it, their visa status will be regarded by some employers as irrelevant.Although not hired to do the job of saving the world from approaching asteroids and fighting for truth, justice and the American (increasingly global) way by battling super-villains with super-powers, these are indeed part of Clark K ents secret job description- jobs that no one else is both willing and able to take on. Besides, given that no one else has the privileged access to Superman that Kent has, he does that part of his job in a way no one else can.4. If you are moonlighting with a second job, keep it to yourself and out of the office Most of the time, when Clark Kent has to switch jobs and attire to respond to an emergency, he heads to a phone booth (which, given their looming elimination by cell phones, is going to require mora time to find). This is an example of excellent compartmentalizing and concealment of second jobs.So, if, for any reason, you need to hold down a second job, it may be wise to be as discreet about it as Superman and to take great pains to ensure you are not caught doing the second job while on duty at the first.4. Be prepared to perform emotional labor Having to display moods, attitudes and feelings in service to a company, clients or customers constitutes what is called emotiona l labor- basically pretending to feel things you dont by displaying fake behavior, such as forced customer service smiles and patience.Clark Kent cleverly utilizes emotional labor as a tactic for concealing his Superman identity No less polite than Superman, Kent is, however, super-meek, even timid and self-effacing. A fast-food franchise counter job would have provided comparable concealment behind non-stop Have a nice day recitations and flash-frozen smiles.However, such emotional labor is not as a requirement limited to basic service industries. Ask any hedge-fund manager with top-tier clients, any doctor with decent bedside manner or a used-car salesman- they know.5. Tailor your resume to the job and omit anything you dont want to discuss in the job interview Do you imagine that Clark Kent would have listed caped super-hero or kryptonite researcher among his credentials noted in his resume?Of course not- not even under interests, hobbies or volunteer work. Likewise, if you have had jobs you cant afford to list in your resume, dont. Just hide them. If thats a choice that is ethical enough for Superman, it should be ethical enough for you.6. Always have a change of clothes with you in the office Like Clark Kent, you may have to unexpectedly change into something else in an emergency or after a coffee spill, or have something on hand to change into for a vigorous physical workout, e.g., at the company gym or in, Kents case, holding up the Golden Gate bridge after a collapse of sections of it.In fact, many of us will have as many reasons as, if not more than, Clark Kent for doing so, since being as clumsy as he pretends to be or having clothing that, unlike his second suit, can be stained or torn will be true for virtually all of us mere mortals.As a corollary to this advice, if there is anything you never change that you are wearing under your business suit every day, make it your little secret.

Add one point for each yes answer and check your score at the end. 20 Questions Do you have a long list of pending approvals and decisions that await action? Micromanaged employees have learned the hard way that they need your approval for every little decision. Behind your back, you may be referred to as the bottleneck.You are always running out of red pens. As far as youre concerned, there isalwaysroom for improvement in any document, even if your margin notes are subjective or nit-picking.You insist on tagg ing along with your employees to any meetings that they have with your boss, company executives, key clients or vendors, or anyone else worthy of your attention. You insist that your employees copy or blind copy you on all emails you deem important. You resent having to babysit them but you have no choice.You rarely have time for developing strategy, because youre working so hard on day-to-day details. Your boss pointed out you r lack of strategic thinking in your last performance review.When you delegate, you spend more time describing how to do the task than on whatneeds to be accomplished.You have each of your employees cell phone numbers and text them often outside work hours. You require weekly and monthly activity reports from your employees.You hold frequent post-mortems meetings to second-guess every decision and action taken.Your employees never take any manahme or come up with new ideas. You need to do their thinking for them.You measure and monitor everything. Your motto could be if you cant measure it, you cant manage it.You never allow your employees to attend meetings for you.You need to know what your employees are doing at all times. You have access to their calendars so that you can keep track of them. You have high turnover and low employee engagement scores. When you do find a rare high performer, they quickly find another opportunity. Scoring 10 or more You are a stone-cold microman ager. You refuse to let go and trust your employees. You need to change your ways, or youll be doomed to a career full of frustration,burnout, and missed promotional opportunities. Talk it over with your boss, someone in human resources, a trusted peer, or an executive coach. There is hope for you, but you have to face the issue and want to change. 5 to 9 You are a borderline micromanager. Hopefully, your micromanaging ways are situational and temporary. For example, maybe you have a lot of new employees on the team. Go back and examine the questions you answered yes to and ask yourself if this behavior is really necessary. Set a goal to eliminate one item at a time until you are at 5 or under. 4or less Youre probably not a micromanager. Still, its worth going back and examining the questions you answered yes to. Ask your employees for honest feedback. Talk to a few managers that you really admire to get their perspective. You may be surprised by the positive impact of eliminating e ven one or two of these micromanaging habits. None. Congratulations You are an empowering leader who knows how to hire and develop great people and then turn them loose. Your employees must love you, your boss must be impressed, and you have no problem maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Please make yourself available to any of those micromanagers that come to you for advice. When Youre a Micromanager Most micromanagers arent aware that theyre doing it. They may take pride in running a tight ship or proclaim that the buck stops here. They may feel theyre giving their employees direction and support. They may not reallytrust their employeesand hope to protect them from screwing up. In any case, micromanagement leads to miserable employees and lower productivity. It stunts the growth of every employee and manager, and it leads to poor long-term performance and the loss of good talent. Dont give up hope, though, if you see yourself in any of the micromanaging behaviors describ ed above. Awareness of the problem is the first step towards improvement.

In preparing for an important meeting with your staff, leadership team, or clients you concentrate on what to say, memorize crucial points, and rehearse your presentation so that you will come across as credible and convincing. This is, of course, something you already know.But did you also know that the people youre hoping to influence will be subliminally evaluating your credibility, confidence, empathy, and trustworthiness - and that their evaluation will be only partially determined by what you say? Did you know that your use of personal space, physical gestures, posture, facial expressions, and eye contact can enhance, support, weaken, or even sabotage your impact as a leader?Here are five crucial things that every leader needs to know about body language1. You make an impression in less than seven s econdsIn business interactions, first impressions are crucial. Once someone mentally labels you as trustworthy or suspicious, powerful or submissive, everything else you do will be viewed through such a filter. If someone likes you, shell look for the best in you. If she mistrusts you, shell suspect all of your actions.While you cant stop people from making snap decisions the human brain is hardwired in this way as a survival mechanism you can understand how to make those decisions work in your favor.First impressions are made in less than seven seconds and are heavily influenced by your body language. In fact, studies have found that nonverbal cues have over four times the impact on the impression you make than anything you say. Here are a few tips to keep in mindAdjust your attitude. People pick up your attitude instantly. Before you greet a client, or enter the conference room for a business meeting, or step onstage to make a presentation, think about the situation and make a c onscious choice about the attitude you want to embody.Smile. Smiling is a positive signal that is underused by leaders. A smile is an invitation, a sign of welcome and inclusion. It says, Im friendly and approachable.Make eye contact. Looking at someones eyes transmits energy and indicates interest and openness. (To improve your eye contact, make a practice of noticing the eye color of everyone you meet.)Lean in slightly. Leaning forward shows youre engaged and interested. But be respectful of the otzu sich persons space. That means, in fruchtwein business situations, stay about two feet away.Watch your posture. Research from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University discovered that posture expansiveness, positioning oneself in a way that opens up the body and takes up space, activated a sense of power that produced behavioral changes in a subject independent of their actual rank or role in an organization. In fact, it was consistently found across three studies that p osture mattered more than hierarchy in making a person think, act, and be perceived in a more powerful way.Shake hands. This is the quickest way to establish rapport. Its also the fruchtwein effective. Research shows it takes an average of three hours of continuous interaction to develop the same level of rapport that you can get with a single handshake. (Just make sure you have palm-to-palm contact and that your grip is firm but not bone-crushing.)2. Building trust depends on your verbal-nonverbal alignmentTrust is established through a perfect alignment between what is being said and the body language that accompanies it. If your gestures are not in full congruence with your verbal message, people subconsciously perceive duplicity, uncertainty, or (at the very least) internal conflict.Neuroscientists at Colgate University study the effects of gestures by using an electroencephalograph (EEG) machines to measure event related zeugungsfhigials brain waves that form peaks and valleys . One of these valleys occurs when subjects are shown gestures that contradict whats spoken. This is the same brain wave dip that occurs when people listen to nonsensical language.So, in a very real way, whenever leaders say one thing and their gestures indicate another, they simply dont make sense. Whenever your body language doesnt match your words (for example, dropping eye contact and glancing around the room while trying to convey candor, rocking back on heels when talking about the organizations solid future, or folding arms across chest while declaring openness) your verbal message is lost.3. What you say when you talk with your handsHave you ever noticed that when people are passionate about what theyre saying, their gestures automatically become more animated? Their hands and arms move about, emphasizing points and conveying enthusiasm.You may not have been aware of this connection before, but you instinctively felt it. Research shows that audiences tend to view people who use a greater variety of gestures in a more favorable light. Studies also find that people who communicate through active gesturing tend to be evaluated as warm, agreeable, and energetic, while those who remain still (or whose gestures seem mechanical or wooden) are seen as logical, cold, and analytic.Thats one reason why gestures are so critical to a leaders effectiveness and why getting them right in a presentation connects so powerfully with an audience.Ive seen senior executives make rookie mistakes. When leaders dont use gestures correctly (if they let their hands hang limply to the side or clasp their hands in front of their bodies in the classic fig leaf position), it suggests they have no emotional investment in the issues or are not convinced about the point theyre trying to make.To use gestures effectively, leaders need to be aware of how those movements will most likely be perceived. Here are four common hand gestures and the messages behind themHidden hands. Hidden hands make you look less trustworthy. This is one of the nonverbal signals that is deeply ingrained in our subconscious. ur ancestors made survival decisions based solely on bits of visual information they picked up from one another. In our prehistory, when someone approached with hands out of view, it was a signal of potential danger. Although today the threat of hidden hands is more symbolic than real, our ingrained psychological discomfort remains.Finger pointing. Ive often seen executives use this gesture in meetings, negotiations, or interviews for emphasis or to show dominance. The problem is that aggressive finger pointing can suggest that the leader is losing control of the situation and the gesture smacks of parental scolding or playground bullying.Enthusiastic gestures. There is an interesting equation of hand and arm movement with energy. If you want to project more enthusiasm and drive, you can do so by increased gesturing. On the other hand, over-gesturing (especially when hands are raised above the shoulders) can make you appear erratic, less believable, and less powerful.Grounded gestures. Arms held at waist height, and gestures within that horizontal plane, help you and the audience feel centered and composed. Arms at waist and bent to a 45-degree angle (accompanied by a stance about shoulder-width wide) will also help you keep grounded, energized, and focused.4. Your most influential communication medium is (still) face-to-faceIn this fast-paced, techno-charged era of email, texts, teleconferences, and video chats, one universal truth remains Face-to-face is the most preferred, productive, and powerful communication medium. In fact, the more business leaders communicate electronically, the more pressing becomes the need for personal interaction.Heres whyIn face-to-face meetings, our brains process the continual cascade of nonverbal cues that we use as the basis for building trust and professional intimacy. Face-to-face interaction is information -rich. We interpret what people say to us only partially from the words they use. We get most of the message (and all of the emotional nuance behind the words) from vocal tone, pacing, facial expressions, and other nonverbal cues.
