Humans are the Ultimate Variable Are Social ROI Sayings True
People are the Ultimate Variable Are Social ROI Sayings True Anybody here each knew about Glen Cathey? No doubt, me not one or the other. Anyway, he as of late ran a blog section from a young lady who was a social enrolling convert. Megan Hopkins described how shed made 3 recruits on Twitter inside about a month and a half with eagerness and extraordinary detail. What's more, an unavoidable conversation resulted. Every enrollment specialist or expert came out of their foxhole to praise the ethics of LinkedIn over Twitter, Facebook over the ATS and obviously, no enlisting past times worth remembering tirade would be finished without the Um, did anybody consider the phone for sky sakes? remarks. Im kidding. All things considered, Im sorta kidding. We have these discussions on the web (and I love them) to keep us sharp and intrigued, to concentrate in on what truly makes an extraordinary spotter and how weve seen our calling develop through the span of 10 years (and numerous any longer). These cheerful discussions fill a more serious need, at any rate for me. Regularly we wind up spewing contextual analyses and respected certainties ceaselessly to think about whether they are even significant any more. Social enrolling ROI: During this conversation, I understood and contended something Id never truly enunciated: social recruiting ROI is difficult to gauge no matter how you look at it as a result of the inalienable factors included. It is a lot more straightforward to buy LinkedIn Recruiter for $8000 (or anyway much it is currently) than to attempt to make sense of the condition for genuine social enrolling. Envision you are an ability procurement pioneer and you have to settle on which exercises your enrollment specialists ought to invest their energy. So as to get a ROI for something like Twitter or Facebook (not a robotizing sourcing device that utilizations such), youd need to make sense of: Their common social twisted (in a selection representative ideally this is simpler to nail down than in most). Their capacity to utilize such an apparatus by any means. It is safe to say that they are ready to compose well? Do they work as per an inflexible calendar or would they say they are alright with constant exercises and on the fly changes? How rapidly would they be able to work/search/impart on informal communities? Is it accurate to say that they are at risk to get occupied by social enrolling? As an ability securing pioneer, you may conclude that a line spending thing that you can evaluate (for example a device gave by a seller) is far simpler than considering in the possible human expense (and upside) of each one of those factors for each individual from the group. Social enlisting ROI really ends up being exceptionally hard to measure IMHO. Everybody in your group is unique! Which is the thing that I saidnot that smoothly: Heres where it gets intriguing. Since I would prefer to send 10,000 tweets than jump on the telephone and there are others like me. I would likewise rather jump on the telephone and computerize a lot of stuff than any time in recent memory EVER hop into salesforce. Likewise excel which harms my cerebrum. So the ROI needs to precisely mirror the ACTUAL speculation. I may be quicker at social whooziwhatsit than you, so the venture is naturally less for my situation. My point is that were this a condition (for ROI or whatever) vitality and exertion would both be factors that were reliant on the natural endowments and abilities of the individual (likewise a variable); difficult to gauge aside from with the individual factors distinguished and tried. SO to offer clearing expressions about the adequacy is intense, at any rate for me. Obviously, there were numerous different conclusions that wandered from mine, most strikingly those that believed that Social Recruiting is being promoted as an all out panacea and being assigned the sort of spending that makes it hard to swallow blog entries with respect to Twitter, employing and sourcing. These are all around set feelings of dread. The measure of time, cash and irritation spent on social selecting, particularly progressively ostensible channels like Twitter and Vine, can be funny. Loot McIntoch put it along these lines: Internet based life (counting twitter) is situated to be the silver projectile for finding and recruiting individuals. All the specialists talk it up, all the business articles rave about it, and henceforth heaps of selection representatives center around it. Here is the primary concern from an enlisting head that is fastidious and tracks this stuff. I dont get amped up for sourcing via web-based networking media channels (yet) in light of the fact that I am taking a gander at the 10,000 foot view of where do every one of our recruits originate from. In light of the ROI (and future) I have to make sure that wehere the cash and assets get apportioned produce the best outcomes by and large (quality, speed cost). While it is estimable and outstanding that I see individuals get 3 recruits from twitter, generally the vitality, exertion (cost time) put resources into these sourcing channels doesn't, not even intently, mirror the associations (or selection representatives/sources) time and friends ROI. Dont misunderstand me, discovering some purple squirrel on Twitter to fill some basic job is incredible, yet my point is that such a large number of individuals in our industry wear look past the finish of their nose to comprehend where they have to deliberately invest their energy (and above all the companys) time to fill all the jobs. I am not an internet based life big talker, yet rather down to business about were the expansive offer is and should be. Jeremy Roberts brought up that an organization selection representative or a solitary wolf may have a simpler time utilizing these instruments, maybe even to a limited extent, because of a portion of the reasons recorded previously. I do think its essential to ensure sourcers and scouts are utilizing online networking to rapidly separate information, not doing marking or promoting. Learning the quickest, most effective procedures to separate information from social ought to be a little piece of an enrollment specialists day. An excessive number of enrollment specialists play on social the entire day as opposed to getting the information they need at that point getting the telephone and making a call. In any case, I urge individuals to peruse the post itself and choose. Hopkins, had a decent handle on a significant number of the responses to the inquiries above and manufactured a scaled down technique for every prerequisite she had. Her outcomes (and the degree of detail) show that she deliberately considered every choice before making it. Gerry Crispin noticed that her methodology was empowering at the end of the day, strategic: I praise her drive and eagerness for grasping devices and advances, testing inside her abilities to do as such and settling the negotiation in any case, this isnt a discussion that that is going to move any dials on the numerous difficulties we face in making world-class enlisting methodologies. There were innumerable different documentations on the side of this post and her experience in general. Jim Durbin talked the way that outsider or office scouts use what they have and this was an incredible utilization of Hopkins time and exertion: Remember that outsiders utilize a the entirety of the above attitude. We look for separation, and being enthusiastic about a social stage causes us get reqs, and get referrals. Think of it along these lines that selection representative produced Im speculating least $60,000 in net edge utilizing Twitter. It is difficult to state that you could enlist 1000 individuals that way, however that $60,000 is nothing to wheeze at. Social isnt simple to scale yet youre paying selection representatives, inward or outer, to bring you results. Making sense of what works for your group would appear to be the smartest choice, and Glenns scout did a damn fine activity. I concur, in some sense, with these focuses. However, as I read through the post, its obvious that as Durbin calls attention to, her outcomes are nothing to sniffle at. Also, it doesnt truly matter if its vital or strategic, in light of the fact that organizations dont accomplish work. Individuals accomplish work. Frameworks dont source, PEOPLE source. Also, nobody is going to fix a wrecked framework by demanding that what works for one, should work for all. The world is amazingly shy of strategic scholars and do-ers. Go Megan!

How Men And Women Think Differently About Their Careers
How Men and Women Think Differently About their Careers (This is certainly one of many posts inspired by Sheryl Sandbergâs Lean In. I counsel you simply surrender and buy the guide now.) In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg talks about a few of the differences in the way in which men and women method to their careers. She cites a 2011 McKinsey report referred to as âUnlocking the Full Potential of Women within the US Economy,â written by Joanna Barsh and Lareina Yee. They report that the addition of girls in the workforce since 1970 adds up to productiveness equal to about a quarter of the U.S. GDP. Yet the numbers of girls within the highest positions in corporations has flattened out, despite the most effective efforts of firms to hunt out and promote talented women. The McKinsey report authors reviewed over a hundred existing research papers, surveyed 2,500 men and women and interviewed 30 chief variety officers and experts to understand the components that maintain women again. They wanted to grasp: âWhat compels bright, extremely-moti vated ladies at middle management rangesâ"and betterâ"to show down opportunities for development, look for jobs outside the corporate, or leave Corporate America altogether?â The report offers some fascinating perception as to how women and men view their jobs. Women go away positions for the same causes males do: for larger challenges, extra money and extra recognition. But they stay in jobs generally for a really completely different reason, based on McKinsey. Women have a tendency to stay in jobs that make them really feel like they're making a distinction and where they enjoy their colleagues more typically than males. Women seem to cross on promotion opportunities, according to the researchers, âWomen donât need to commerce that joy for what they concern will be vitality-draining conferences and corporate politics on the next administration echelon.â In Sheryl Sandbergâs terms, women donât lean in. A 2012 McKinsey research of four,000 men and women from main firms discovered that males wanted the top spot of their firm at twice the speed girls did (36 % of men, compared to 18 percent of ladies, stated that being CEO was a objective.) Some of this is attributable to what is usually called the âImposter Syndrome,â which seems to have an effect on many extra ladies than males. Men tend to internalize their accomplishments more usually, that is to say that they attribute success to their very own expertise and skills. Women are inclined to externalize their success; they attribute accomplishment extra often to luck, exhausting work, or help from their group or other supportive individuals. I recently wrote a story about a girl who began a non-profit and has achieved some recognition in my local market. When I despatched the story to her to truth verify, she made one edit to a truth, however three edits for fashion. Each type edit modified the credit score for success from âherâ to âher team.â It sounds unusual some 45 years after wom en turned a major presence within the workforce, however girls usually price themselves and their efficiency worse than they really are. On the opposite hand, males constantly fee themselves as higher than they really are. Sandberg writes that a examine of one thousand potential candidates for elected workplace found that males had been 60 percent more more likely to fee themselves as âextremely certifiedâ to run for office, despite having no extra credentials or expertise than the ladies studied. Joe Kremer, a Dell government, as soon as spoke a few job he posted that listed six key hiring standards. Male candidates who may meet two or three criteria lobbied him for the job, every telling him that they could work out the remainder. Kremer is quoted as saying, âThe person who should have got the job was feminine however she didnât apply. I approached her and he or she said, âhowever of the six issues I need, I solely have 5 of them nailedâ.â It was Kremer who insisted that she apply, and she or he got the job. I can hear the groans from my male readers. Really? Whatâs mistaken with you? One explanation is that modesty is what we deem to be attractive in ladies. We value modesty in males as properly, but the alpha male isn't expected to be modest, nor penalized for his overt confidence. Not true of ladies â" even the alpha females. We are anticipated to minimize our achievements, to credit score our team for our success. Itâs very scary to stand up and take full credit for what youâve carried out; men will contemplate you uppity and girls will disapprove. No one needs to become a lightning rod. Somehow, weâll should get over that. Published by candacemoody Candaceâs background contains Human Resources, recruiting, training and assessment. She spent a number of years with a national staffing company, serving employers on both coasts. Her writing on enterprise, profession and employment points has appeared within the Florida Times Union, the Jacksonville Business Journal, the Atlanta Journal Constitution and 904 Magazine, in addition to a number of national publications and web sites. Mines Bigger . . . Than Yours - Workology
Mines Bigger . . . Than Yours - Workology What is the Impotence of Influence? Id love you forever, if youd take a moment and vote for my session at SXSW. Vote here to see The Impotence of Influence. Mines Bigger Than Yours at the 2013 SXSW Interactive Conference. Crystal and I owe you a cocktail. Shes buying. . . What is the Impotence of Influence? Influence is a funny and fickle thing. Its about building relationships, starting the conversation, and yet its a contest. It shouldnt be really, but without competition we would never have anything to strive for or to measure against. I call this the impotence of influence. These are the kind of things often discussed among my group of friends usually with cocktails and sometimes a cigar in hand. We shoot the breeze, argue and debate amongst ourselves. Its truly when most forward thinking conversations happen at least for me anyway. And lately, when Ive had the occasion my thoughts gravitate to influence. Why are we doing what we are doing, and what motivates me to write and manage this blog everyday? Is it for the money, the opportunity, or something more. And is that something influence? Onion as a Metaphor for Building Trust and Influence A couple years ago, I sat in Chris Brogan and Julian Smiths session at SXSW. They had recently published their book, Trust Agents. Relationships and influence are built purely on trust. By giving yourself and your insights purely and without fail, you are building a relationship, a collective. Chris described influence and relationships like an onion. While gaining trust among that onion layer and group of individuals, there is always another layer to reach. And another layer to peel back. One layer where you as the influencer, the individual start at the beginning. You peel and navigate each layer over and over and over again until you reach the center. I dont think I really understood what Chris was really saying until not too long ago, but is stuck with me. Influence is not stagnate. It is ever-changing and evolving like its audience and advancing like the technology we use to enhance our lives every day. In theory you will never reach the center of that onion. These relationships and building trust takes time and enormous amounts of effort, and most of us are not patient enough to wait so we work towards gaming the system. We try to speed through those layers, and we use methods to increase our Klout score and give our influence the lift we believe it deserves. Sometimes weve put in the effort truly, but most times we have not. While I believe that even Mother Theresa had selfish intentions, there are those that do believe they can make a difference and with trust build a community through engagement and conversation. I like to think Im one of them, but its hard to move people past the skepticism and cynicalne ss. Doing so is where the real influence lies. The truth of the matter is that theres always someone whos bigger, better, higher or has a louder voice. This includes online influence tools and measurement like Klout, Empire Avenue, and Peer Index. That same guy (or gal) probably has a bigger house, nicer car, and a better tasting latte. For them it is a contest and competition. What those scores dont tell you is the behind the scenes reality. Often times those same people who have the big house and nice car have a mortgage and car payment to match. Theyre leveraged up to their eyeballs. Their influence requires an expected level of performance, cash, and stress. Influence Expert I am Not I dont believe Im an expert on influence. Im just someone whos been there and is continuing their journey building, growing, and evolving along the way. And thats pretty much what Crystal Miller and I want to discuss during our 2013 SXSW Interactive session titled, The Impotence of Influence. Mines Bigger Than Yours. Over the course of the next few months, Crystal and I will be conducting research on influence. During our session at SXSW we will release the results of our influence study. This data could very well support or foil our point of view. Just like building an online community based on trust. Thats work especially since influence is not a science. Speaking of work, chances are youve probably read some of Crystals insights into influence here. Its quite the collection. Vote for Our Session at SXSW 2013 Interactive But to further our discussion, Crystal and I need your help. To get to SXSW in 2013, we have to have people like our session, and by people that means you. Between August 13 through the 31st, SXSW is accepting votes for peoples favorite panels to be part of the upcoming SXSW. It takes less than 30 seconds. You can vote here and view our sessions full description. Your vote helps us increase our chances to present our session at SXSW. Do you believe influence is important online or can the system be gamed? Id appreciate your comments below.

Changing What We Do
Changing What We Do There was an article in the NYTimes this week about the states of the work showcase in a Wisconsin town thatlost over4,000 GM employments. These overpaid ($28/hr) laborers are currently being compelled to re-device themselves for occupations that wont verge on paying them what they used to make. Here is an example of the progressing profession ways: Circuit tester to Radiology Technician Truck Driver to Logistics and Warehouse Management Machine Operator to Veterinarian Assistant Representative to Restaurateur The US economy used to be an equalization of assembling and administration segment employments. In any case, that changed. We dont make numerous things in the United States today. That implies that the a great many individuals with assembling foundations will have minimal decision however to take their professions toward another path. The NY State Dept of Labor publishs month to month newsletters. In the most recent release, it expressed that in the Finger lakes there were more than 1,500 new openings made in Educational and Health care administrations from 2007 to 2008. Not immense numbers, however one of only a handful not many developing enterprises in the area. So the message that I ampassing along is this: Thinkservice, think autonomous, think worldwide commercial center. Anyjob that genuinely requiresthat you contact or help isnt going anyplace yet. We cannot anticipate what the sought after occupations will be quite a while from now (however they despite everything attempt). That originates from the DOL. It is so hard to foresee what the future holds. You can look backhistoricallyto perceive how this nation emerged from past downturns, yet each one of those occasions this countrys cosmetics was massively fabricating based. That isnt the case, we cannot trust that making more vehicles, tanks, planes, anything, will bring us out of where we are. The employments that are ideally going to originate from the present boost bundle are foggy. Notwithstanding, this we know. They wont be paying $28/hr. Re-tooling and re-planning arethe answers. Down size individual financial plans. Rearrange your way of life. On the off chance that you cannot rake in some serious cash, at that point you should adore what you do!

ARE YOU BEING MENTORED INTO A CORNER
ARE YOU BEING MENTORED INTO A CORNER Tutors give a 'sheltered space' to improve your specialized or relational works abilities. For a considerable length of time, just men had guides, and it was one explanation ladies didn't progress. Presently, ladies are being tutored more than ever. Furthermore, that is an issue. Ladies are at long last being coached; men are being supported. What's the distinction? Coaches help you 'Expertise Up' and supports help you 'Climb.' Without a support, you may wind up in a lifelong corner: awesome at your present job, yet without the chance to accomplish more. Numerous ladies, disappointed by the absence of genuine open door in spite of long periods of tutoring, abandon vocation progress or leave their organization in sicken. Take a gander at the various attributes, and choose what you have, and what you need! Guides A tutoring relationship has these qualities: Chain of command Mentors originate from any level in the organization. Insider or Outsider? Coaches can be in your organization or an outside association. Shared choice: A tutor can offer to support you, or you can move toward somebody for counsel. Ability centered Mentoring encourages you build up a specific expertise, helping you perform better at this moment. Specifically fulfilling Both sides are genuinely contributed: the mentee gets individual and expert turn of events, and the coach gets individual fulfillment from your development. Safe Space: You talk about your apprehensions and disappointments with your coach, realizing that she will stay discreet. Does that sound like a relationship you have at work? Congrats, you have a tutor! Backers On the off chance that you need to ascend the stepping stool at work, a support is basic. Search for these attributes: Senior Level The support is in every case increasingly senior, even at the highest point of the organization. Single direction determination: A support picks a protégé, in view of their presentation. Organization Insider: Traditionally, a support is inside your organization, and gets you new open doors there, however outer backers likewise exist. In any case, they satisfy the following basis: Control or impact over recruiting choices The support either settles on the employing choice for that job, or impacts the individual creation the choice. Expertly commonly gainful: This relationship is about your and your support's proficient achievement. Your prosperity builds their capacity; your disappointment diminishes it. Courageous Space: Don't show your support your feelings of dread. Show your certainty! On the off chance that need them to trust in you, show that you put stock in yourself. Think about Melissa, a mid-level showcasing administrator. Her guide, Lynda, a Sales Director, causes her improve her open talking style. Her support, Nathalie a Regional Commercial Head, needs to make her a Regional Marketing Head, a 2-advance advancement. Melissa tells Nathalie, 'That seems like an incredible chance. How about we talk about what I have to concentrate on to truly succeed.' She outlines for Lynda, 'I'm extremely anxious about such an enormous stretch. How would I make a decent beginning?' Why the cover letter matters as much as the résumé - Pathfinder Careers
Why the introductory letter matters as much as the list of qualifications - Pathfinder Careers Why the introductory letter matters as much as the list of references I have the incidental customer who stops when they are determined what the venture level is for an introductory letter. Why so much, they wonder. Is it actually that significant? Consider this: What might occur on the off chance that you had THE ideal list of references, however then sent along a going with introductory letter that had syntactic, spelling and accentuation mistakes? Imagine a scenario in which you didn't communicate considerations in an unmistakable, convincing way. How might a business react to this? On the off chance that you speculated not well, you are correct! Editing blunders in an introductory letter are the main employment prospect executioner for list of qualifications and applications. Truth be told, similar guidelines for list of references apply for introductory letters. They HAVE to be great. Introductory letters are in equivalent remaining to list of references for the very explanation that it informs a great deal concerning a competitor that a list of qualifications cannot convey. Though a list of references is normally introduced more in the abridged or 'broadcast' style of correspondence, an introductory letter is a chief exhibition of your expert composing aptitudes⦠much along the lines of how a business may anticipate that you should convey by means of email messages or letters for their benefit, should you go under their work. Another key piece of information to imminent bosses that an introductory letter conveys is a comprehension about the up-and-comer that goes past the words on the page. Does the candidate really 'get' what the business is looking for in candidates for this specific position? I review one candidate who sent in a genuinely qualified list of references combined with an introductory letter that tended to the position we were selecting, however the individual unmistakably 'raised' themselves to an a lot higher administration job than what the position commanded. It was certain that there was a distinction between what the individual's view of the activity obligations were, and the ones being looked for after. Something else managers check is whether the forthcoming representatives follow the application bearings. Inability to consent in the predefined rules could be warnings about how this individual may act in an organization will they do it their way or follow organization strategies/approaches? By neglecting to follow application rules, many occupation searchers make their own hindrances to work by getting removed basically by not following bearings. Presently lets tackle introductory letter content. Prior in this blog, Ernest White, the HR proficient, expounded on tending to abilities. The introductory letter is the prime spot to relate the aptitudes and watchwords of the activity position to your experience. This part ought to be directly to the point, convincing, and make the peruser need to peruse your list of references. One strategy I use when educating list of qualifications composing classes is to make the accompanying condition to show this point: introductory letter (why employ me) + continue (the realities) = the activity Personalization is additionally a key part of an introductory letter. On the off chance that the employment opportunity has a nonexclusive Consideration Human Resources Manager individual to guide your application to, invest the energy to attempt to 'burrow' out a name. Call the organization and ask the switchboard administrator through and through what the name of the HR chief is. Google them on the Internet-odds are the individual's name is referenced in an official statement when making prominent employing declarations. The individual may be additionally an individual from the nearby human asset proficient affiliation. Or on the other hand, you may even discover the individual's name recorded in an online business organizing bunch like LinkedIn. Any means you can take to customize the introductory letter and direct it to a genuine person is significant. It may be the case that 99% of different competitors present their applications to Human Resource Manager and yours comes in rout ed to Jane Smith, HR Manager. Wouldn't you say that Jane may be at all inquisitive with respect to how you got her name? At long last, this early on archive should just be one page â" no papers, if it's not too much trouble Keep in mind, you have the limited ability to focus insignificant seconds to either catch boss intrigue or get hurled into the dismissal heap. You should be succinct, important, show a comprehension of the employment opportunity and have the option to relate your abilities as an answer for their staffing issue. It is a great deal to do, however basic to making the pitch to bosses with regards to why they should recruit you. The exact opposite thing I'd prefer to make reference to is that your introductory letter ought to never be a reiteration of your aptitudes nor should it rehash what you've just expressed in more noteworthy detail in your list of qualifications. You need to situate yourself in the accompanying manners: learned about their organization, an ideal match to the abilities that they need, and catch enthusiasm to propel the peruser to go to your list of qualifications for more prominent detail. It's an intense thing to achieve in only one page, which makes this archive similarly as significant as your list of qualifications. To put it plainly, introductory letters can uncover a ton to managers, or they can show nothing by any means. In any case, recollect, in any event, nothing can give you something, so it is significant that you understand that the introductory letter is significant and should be as impeccable as your list of references!

Dont Use a Resume Template if Want to Land a New Job
Dont Use a Resume Template if Want to Land a New Job Every wonder why you donât get called up for an interview? It could be that you are using a resume or CV based on a template. Your resume probably gets about 5-10 seconds before the person screening it decides to read on or to chuck in the bin. HR people, recruiters, hiring managers see hundreds of resumes every day and nothing bores them more than another template resume. The goal of your resume is to stand out from all the other job seekers and be picked for an interview; if you are using the same template as all the other hopefuls you will achieve neither objective. Still not convinced? Here are a few reasons not to use a resume template: Same as everyone else: Employers have developed a trained eye for spotting resume templates. Recruiters can spot them a mile away. The two benefits of using a resume is that it requires little time and effort to write your document. Basically, itâs the lazy way of doing it. What type of signal do you think these copy and paste skills send to the hiring manager? I would think that this applicant, if hired, would always look for quick and dirty ways of solving problems. I might be cynical here but can you afford to risk that? A lot of the templates out there are sub standard: Who created all the templates on the Internet in the first place? Nobody knows, but the templates are highly recommended and are supposedly written by an expert. Whoever these âexpertsâ are shall remain one of mankindâs great mysteries; I can only establish that most of the templates are very poor. Unless you are in the career industry, telling which resumes are good, bad and ugly will be very difficult and not advisable. You are selling yourself short: Surely you deserve the best resume there is and not just a run-of-the-mill template ripped off from the web? By really taking the time to making your own resume, you will enhance your life skills as you have to master writing sales copy, creating a salesy layout and a format that is pleasing on the eye. It will take time to make a great resume but the finished product can be used throughout your career (just update it every now and then!). So what is a job seeker to do? Hereâs my plan. Go out and Google resumes in your field, both templates and resumes from actual people who have posted their documents publicly. Save up to 10 decent ones and start reading and getting a feel for the language, layout and formats. Then delete all the saved resumes and start with your own from a blank canvas. I assure you that you will be full of inspiration from others and instead of copying what they have written, you will now cherry pick their components and putting them on paper with your own words. Writing a resume from scratch is hard work but itâs doable for all of us and one thing is certain: it will get noticed. If I really canât do it? You can try to give your resume a complete makeover. Mash it up, throw in some synonyms, change the spacing, type fonts, headers and footers. Make it look original and hope it passes muster with the employer. Or if you are ready to spend some money, work with a professional resume writer that can put together a new and original document for you. Bottom line: Using a template will never make you stand out and chances are your application will be cut short due to your resume being the same as every other job seekerâs. I say take charge of your job search efforts and invest some time in to creating an original document that sells you effectively and put yourself in pole position for the next job! Do you use a template and has it got you any interviews? Have you created your own resume and what are the results of your applications? Share your thoughts in the comments. Image: Shutterstock

Personal Branding In 6 Seconds And 15 Seconds - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Personal Branding In 6 Seconds And 15 Seconds - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Your resume branding is used in different ways for different employer decisions. To personally brand yourself well, youll want to understand how 6 second branding is different than 15 second branding. 6 Second Branding Your 6 second brand is critical because your audience takes an average 6 seconds to decide if youre qualified or not, according to studies by TheLadders. Heres how the decision is typically made: Qualified/Non-qualified decision: The first decision made when your resume is visually reviewed is if you are qualified for the job. In just 6 seconds, your reader only has time to absorb a gut feel. Your reader wont have the time to read the details of your resume, showing why you are or are not qualified. The qualified/not qualified decision is made much more quickly than that on average. Decision isnt made based on facts: How can your readers make qualified/non-qualified decisions based on the facts in your resume in only 6 seconds? News Flash they cant. First impression: In 6 seconds, a qualified decision is based on the first impression your resume gives to readers. Better make it a good one heres how So how do you create a 6 second personal brand? Crystal Clear: To make the first impression that youre qualified, your personal brand has to be crystal clear about the job youre applying for and why youre a great candidate. Generalist Branding Doesnt Work: Employers dont hire based on generalist skills as a primary qualification today its secondary. Employers hire new hires to help solve a specific problem and thats what they look for on your resume, even for generalist roles. If a hiring manager wants a generalist, he/she determines which candidate, that has solved the specific problem also, has general skills through the interview, not through the resume. Concise: To brand yourself in 6 seconds you have to be concise. In 6 seconds, your audience isnt deciding if youre qualified or not by reading a paragraph. You need to be so concise that your readers can immediately absorb your personal brand into their gut in the snap of your fingers. 15 Second Branding Your 15 second brand is important because your audience decides if youll get an interview or get discarded in an average 15 seconds. Your personal brand most definitely is a big part of this decision. Heres how the 15 second decision is typically made: Decision based on quick scan: In 15 seconds, all your readers do is scan your resume quickly. They arent going to see a lot of detail, so you need to carefully select and influence what they will see in their scan. First Impression supported by quick scan: Your resumes personal brand is potentially the biggest way you can influence whether youll get an interview or not. Yes, your audience decides based on the scan, but your personal brand is what sticks in your readers gut. Top Half: In 15 seconds, all your reader sees is the top half of your first page, because with Applicant Tracking System pre-screening used by most employers, your resume will almost certainly be read on screen. Fold your resume in half thats the most your reader will see to decide if youll get the interview. So how do you create a 15 second personal brand? Demonstrates Subject Matter Expertise: Just like generalist branding doesnt work in creating an effective 6 second brand, it wont work well in 15 seconds either. In deciding if youll get an interview, it takes more than just being qualified in todays job market of job shortages and mass competition. Employers look for candidates who have already solved the problems the hiring manager faces today Subject matter experts. Influences Gut Feel: Your personal brand has to be communicated so quickly that its immediately absorbed into your readers gut. A paragraph wont do this its too long. Supported: Increase the believability of your brand by including support for your brand within the bullets on your resume. Remember, your readers 15 second field of vision is the top half of your first page have some supporting statements where theyll be seen. What kinds of changes will you make to your resume when you start to think about your second and 15 second personal branding? Have these personal branding structures caused you to rethink how you start your resume? 5 Steps to successful reinvention. And a Melissa update.
5 Steps to successful reinvention. And a Melissa update. The best way to get someone to call you from your LinkedIn profile is to put Confidential in the employer field. You might be wondering: Who does this? Answer: Melissa. For those of you unfamiliar with the story of Melissa, I will now summarize a hundred blog posts about her like this: Melissa, Queen of Reinvention, finds jobs almost anyone would kill for, they are disasters, she leaves. Then she repeats, but in a way that is different enough that I have trouble yelling at her for making the same mistake twice. This is true with men, too. And this is a good time to tell you that the bankers in Melissaâs lifeher former life, to be clearare plagued by the idea that there is no difference between their porn life (very successful since they travel a lot with their laptop) and their real life (very unsuccessful since real women do not want to have their hair pulled out). Are there any twelve year old boys reading this post? Listen to your mom! If you look at porn you will ruin sex for yourself. (Oh, wait. The only twelve-year-old boy reading this post is my son: Donât worry, Melissa is okay. She will be back on the farm for Thanksgiving.) 1. You can be known for lots of things. Donât be known for the stuff about you thatâs annoying. Melissa speaks Chinese fluently. She is confident enough about her fluency that when she was working as a recruiter for a Chinese COO, Melissa said to her, âI know the way you tell Americans to pronounce your name isnt correctbecause I know how to pronounce it in Chinese.â And the woman said, âNo. I like it the American way. Thatâs the right way to pronounce it. And Melissa said, âNo! Thatâs wrong! Youd fire her, too, right? If Melissa likes you she stalks you. The way she stalked me made me first think sheâs a weirdo but then I realized that I would die if I couldnt have her around because she is so smart and interesting. So she launched a recruiting business because she knows everyone, and so many startup founders wanted to hire her for their assistant and she couldnât be everyoneâs assistant. In fact, she couldnât be anyoneâs assistant because she canât hold down a job for more than a few months, but she is great at knowing what someone needs in an assistant. She first found this out because she put on her resume that she was my assistant. She left off the part about how I fired her three times, because really, you guys, your resume is not your life story. Use only the good parts. Then people wanted to hire her. And because Melissa and I spend like 500 hours a month researching personality type, she always knew exactly what the person needed. 2. Find your secret sauce. Melissa and I spend a gazillion hours studying personality type because it works. And knowing all that makes us look incredibly smart. Incredible even to ourselves. As soon as we know someoneâs type we know enough about them to give them very good career advice (me) or give them a perfect match for an assistant (Melissa). So Melissa was blowing through personal assistant jobs for startup founders, which, by the way, often pay in the low six-figures. She was starting the job, straightening out messes and then hiring the perfect person to replace herself. Then she stopped taking the jobs and just started hiring the perfect person first. She just gave people a personality test, met them in person, and made matches. And then she got this huge startup-founder referral business. And this is a good time to tell you that the startup founders are such incredible egomaniacs. Melissa would never say this because they are paying her a lot of money to tell them that they are an ENTP and they need an INTJ to keep their life in order. The egomaniac startup founders are suited for their job, and crazy is a good trait, too, and Melissa would always say to the founder, Oh, Iâve had really crazy difficult bosses. Itâs my specialty.â And sheâd always mean me. The startup founders think their executive assistant is an accessory. Like a smart watch. Potential investors need to see that the founders have a good one. So the founder will pay a lot. Melissa charges $10K to find an assistant. And she has a waiting list. 3. Ignore sound advice. But then one day, she got a call and learned that [a super incredibly famous person who you have for sure heard of] needs an assistant who speaks Mandarin. I told Melissa, âDonât take the job. You will ruin [famous personâs] life when you leave. Then Melissa gives my name as a reference. And I talk to the famous person. I try not to think about how I am talking to this person and definitely I should be pitching the person to get money. And then Iâm thinking, Oh God, I need a startup idea for China right now. But before I can formulate my pitch, famous person is asking me if I would recommend hiring Melissa. And I say, âYeah. If you have a project that lasts six minutes. Because thatâs Melissaâs attention span. I tell famous person that I love Melissa and my kids love Melissa but Melissa wonât keep a job. Everyone gets pissed when Melissa leaves. Famous person is blown away by Melissaâs insight. About everyone. I do not tell famous person that you can just hang out at my house and learn personality type and then youâll have blow-away-insight as well. I tell famous person to give Melissa big bonuses for staying. So Melissa signs up to get a $50K bonus for every six months that she stays. Melissa is making $50K in a single month from her recruiting business. But even the fact that she doesnt need the money does not keep Melissa from taking the job. 4. Expand your network in surprising ways so you can expand yourself in surprising ways. The access Melissa has to famous people is now so huge that I stop calling her to find links, or find blog posts that I know are there somewhere on my blog but I canât find. I stop calling her to remind me how to put a url in the save bar. Or whatever itâs called on the browser. I really just wait for her to call. From rooms full of people who blow me away. I try to be calm though. âWhatever,â I tell Melissa. âI read about that guy. Heâs a jerk to women. I wouldnt want to be in a room with him. Then Melissa quits. Of course. I hope famous person remembers I told her so. But famous person loves Melissa so much that famous person connects Melissa to more famous people, including someone I love so much that I actually stalk online like sheâs my high school boyfriend or something. Summarizing: Melissa is now hiring executive assistants to the biggest startup founders and the people you read about in the magazines in your doctorâs office. And sheâs doing it by pegging everyoneâs personality type and then matching them with the personality type that has the skills necessary for the job the job of compensating for the bossâs personality type. (Or working around it.) Melissa had to pick between living close to New York famous clients or Silicon Valley famous clients. She picked the latter, packed up the NYC apartment and the dog, and drove cross-country with her boyfriend who is still her boyfriend. I will remind everyone now that if you stop picking jobs that are horrible for you, then you just sort of naturally stop picking men that are horrible for you. And vice versa. It doesnt come all at once. It comes slowly. But Melissa is running her own business, and she has a boyfriend who is smart and loyal and honest. He is an ISTJ. Did you know that ISTJs hate personality type so much that most of the ISTJ information on the Internet is what itâs like to date an ISTJ instead of what itâs like to be an ISTJ? 5. Reinvention takes years, and itâs a process that never stops. Remember how I said Melissa is so rich I canât even ask her to do stuff for me any more? Well, I told her she has to do the my personality type master class with me because itâs so fun to do with her. But also, because Melissa was so incredibly lost. Really. Iâve been writing about her being lost for five years. And she found her perfect career by understanding first her own personality type and then all the peoplesâ around her. She made herself extremely valuable. And this is what Iâve done, too, with my coaching business. And we realize that anyone can do this in their career. Personality type is a secret key to the door to your perfect life. You can tell me that I sound like a crazy person. But Melissa and I have been sounding like crazy people for years. And weâre making a lot of money. And we love what weâre doing. And you can, too. So join us for the personality type course. You will have so much fun. And if you are an ENTJa personality type that doesnt care about funyou will make lots of money. Hooray. And sign up now!
